Some years ago, a reporter asked the late
comedian Flip Wilson about his faith commitment. "Oh, haven't you
heard"? said Flip Wilson, "I'm a Jehovah's Bystander."
"A Jehovah's Bystander?" the reporter
questioned. "I've never heard of a Jehovah's Bystander. What in the
world is that"?
To which Flip Wilson replied, "Well, they
asked me to be a witness, but I didn't want to get that involved!"
In his tongue-in-cheek way, Flip Wilson was
teasing us, making fun of the way so many people play around the edges
of commitment but are afraid to make the leap of faith; afraid to give
themselves totally, completely, wholeheartedly. The season of Lent calls
us to deeper commitment and challenges us to examine our faith with
questions like these:
* Are we real witnesses or just bystanders?
* Are we deeply committed as we could be?
* Are we really involved, heart and soul, in
living the faith daily?
* Are we really loyal to Christ and his
church?
* Can people see the Spirit of Christ in us?
Lent is a call to deeper involvement and
deeper faith. Let me invite you on a journey, a spiritual journey, as
we walk together with Jesus to and through the cross in these days of
Lent.
STARTING THURSDAY
FEBRUARY 22ND, 2007 - 1 TO 2 P.M.
at the church - a 6 week course. Study guide book: "Unlock
the Secrets of a Successful Prayer Life" by Bill Bright. Cindy Sheardown
will be running this program. All women are encouraged to participate!
